The Campgrounds Where Trains Run Past Your Tent

Quick answer: We checked every Ontario provincial park campground and every Parks Canada campground for active rail lines. 61 have one within earshot — 45 in Ontario, 16 in the national parks. In Ontario the closest is Rainbow Falls, around 275 metres from the line. But the real surprise is the Rockies: Lake Louise (124 metres from the CP mainline), Banff, Yoho, Jasper, Kootenay, Glacier and Mount Revelstoke all have campgrounds on a working freight corridor, and several of them see 18 to 30 trains a day.

Update — July 27, 2026. We rebuilt how campground coordinates are validated, and the national parks moved more than anything else: every Parks Canada coordinate had been an unchecked geocoding result, and roughly a third of them turned out to be wrong or unverifiable. The Ontario tables below are unchanged — every distance and train count re-checked exactly. The national parks table has three changes: Kootenay's McLeod Meadows is removed (at its corrected position there is no active rail within range — the old point was almost certainly sitting near Redstreak, which does), Lake Louise's Protection Mountain moves from 200 m to 238 m and loses its train count, and six campgrounds join the list whose coordinates were wrong or missing when this was written.

Trains are a different problem than highways

In our post on road noise we treated traffic as what it is: a continuous hum that either bothers you or doesn't. Trains don't work that way, and it's a mistake to average them into the same number.

A freight pass-by is brief — one to three minutes — but loud, and the loudness is not the point. The point is that it happens at 3 a.m., then again at 4:15, and that a sound which wakes you is worse than a louder sound that doesn't. Twenty quiet hours and four pass-bys is a worse night than a steady 55 dB you stop noticing by nine o'clock.

So we report rail separately, and we report how often alongside how close. Distance alone tells you almost nothing about whether you'll sleep.

How we measured this

For every campground with a confirmed location, we find the nearest active railway in OpenStreetMap and compute the distance to the track itself, not to the park boundary. "Active" is doing real work here: yards, sidings, spurs and crossovers are excluded, as are lines tagged industrial, military or tourist, because a siding that sees one shunting move a week is not what keeps you awake.

From that distance we estimate a pass-by level using the same attenuation approach as our road model, anchored to reference levels of roughly 88 dB at 30 m for a mainline and 82 dB for a branch line — figures in the range transit-noise guidance uses for freight. Mainlines are checked to 3 km and branch lines to 2 km, further than we search for roads, because a freight pass-by carries much further than steady traffic at the same level.

Frequency comes from a different source entirely: Transport Canada's Grade Crossings Inventory, a free public dataset of 23,724 level crossings with daily train counts. We match each campground to the nearest inventoried crossing on the same line and borrow its count. That's an approximation — traffic varies along a subdivision — but it's real observed data rather than a guess, and it's the difference between "a railway is nearby" and "40 trains a day are nearby." The same file tells us whether that crossing is active, which is where the bell figures below come from.

Four entries used to carry a rail estimate despite not being campgrounds — Fort Langley and Fort Rodd Hill are national historic sites, Trent-Severn is a waterway, and Lake Louise's shuttle area is a parking lot. The first version of this post excluded them by hand. They are now filtered out of the data itself and carry no estimate at all, which is where the check belonged in the first place. Jasper's Overflow stays in: it's rough camping, but it is camping.

The national parks were built by a railway, and it never left

This is the part we didn't expect. Banff was established in 1885 after Canadian Pacific workers came across the hot springs; Yoho and Glacier followed in 1886. The mountain parks exist in their current form largely because the CPR wanted destinations along its line — and the line is still there, still busy, still running through the valleys where the campgrounds are.

Lake Louise is the striking one: 124 metres from a mainline carrying roughly two dozen trains a day, in what is probably the most photographed valley in the country. Nobody books Lake Louise expecting silence, but nobody books it expecting a freight train every hour either.

Banff is the other pattern worth seeing: all six of its campgrounds are on the list. Tunnel Mountain's three loops sit between 956 m and 1.3 km of the same line, Johnston Canyon at 606 m, and both Two Jack campgrounds further out. There is no rail-free option in the park — only degrees of it.

Jasper's Whistlers campground shows why distance alone misleads. At 2.3 km it's far enough that the pass-by level is modest — but at 30 trains a day it has the highest frequency of any national park campground we checked. Whether that matters to you depends entirely on how you sleep.

Ontario: the north shore and the commuter belt

Ontario's rail-adjacent campgrounds split into two very different groups.

Lake Superior campgrounds — Neys, White Lake, Rainbow Falls, Kakabeka Falls — sit on the transcontinental line along the north shore. Fewer trains than the southern corridor, but close: the loops here run from about 275 metres (Rainbow Falls' Rossport) out to a kilometre, with White Lake's Moccasin Flower at 568 metres and Neys' loops between 348 and 784 metres.

Windsor–Toronto–Montreal corridor campgrounds — Darlington and Bronte Creek — are the opposite: further from the track, but on the busiest passenger and freight corridor in the country, where 40 to 46 trains a day is normal. Darlington's Hilltop campground manages both problems at once: 324 metres from a line carrying 40 trains daily, and 400 metres from Highway 401. It is the noisiest combination in the province by our estimates.

Oastler Lake deserves a mention for consistency: all four of its campgrounds sit between 449 and 668 metres from a line running 21 trains a day. There is no quiet loop to move to.

The bell you didn't think about

Here's a noise source that doesn't appear in any campground description. Level crossings come in two kinds: passive, marked only with a crossbuck sign, and active, with flashing lights and a bell. Of the 23,724 crossings in Transport Canada's inventory, 6,986 are active.

An active crossing's bell rings for every single train, day and night, for as long as the train occupies the crossing. If you're camped within a few hundred metres of one, the bell is arguably more intrusive than the train — it's higher-pitched, it's rhythmic, and it carries. Neys, Darlington, Oastler Lake, Chutes, Kakabeka Falls, Yoho, Banff and Mount Revelstoke all have an active crossing near the campground.

We flag this wherever the inventory tells us the nearest crossing is active. It's the kind of detail that's obvious in hindsight and impossible to find in advance.

What we can't tell you

Three limits worth stating plainly.

How to use this

If you're a light sleeper, the frequency column matters more than the distance column. Four trains a day at 500 metres will bother you less than 40 at 2 kilometres. If you sleep through anything, the reverse.

And as with road noise, check the campground, not the park. At Neys, Area 4 sits at 348 metres while Area 1 is at 784 metres; at Darlington, Hilltop is 324 metres from the line while Cliffside and Lakeside are nearer 690 metres — a few dB for the price of picking a different loop on the same booking page.
